Shimazu start with beastly samurai and an armor province, which when maxed will make you almost invincible against any AI army (not to mention the generals' "infantry commander trait" for a +3 melee attack). Unit wise, the strongest clan is probably tied between Uesugi and Shimazu (not counting the Ikkos or Hattori, which I don't have). I always play on VH, because I'm not skilled enough for Legendary (and I don't really like the excessive AI cheating either). My criteria for what constitutes as a good clan is not only the special traits and units but also the starting position and amount of historical celebrities it possesses. There is no need for close fighting barbarity like the Date dogs, or poop flinging like the Chosokabe monkeys. Then they clean the field of any standing garbage.įor the Hojo, artillery is king. My General stays in the back with 2-4 Yari Cavalry in the case the enemy cavalry manages to come through without routing first. I prioritize the enemy general as target. Not one computer army had so far came close to my lines without routing due to gunpowder scare. Matchlocks first, then Rocket Samurais, then Fire Mangonels. Therefore, I don't need to convert to Christianity. Any accuracy bonuses apply to siege units too, which is wonderful.Įuropean cannons are not needed since they do not cause enough damage in the field when the enemy is attacking (no grapeshot). The cities are very easy to develop if you know your Chi. In my game, once I controlled eastern coast of Honshu, I developed my cities so I can get 5 Fire Mangonels, 4 Matchlock Samurai, and 6 Rocket Samurais. You can go West, East, or North and they will all play out differently. I also love Hojo due to non-linear expansion path. My favorite is the Hojo, because I loved massed artillery from Napoleon: TW. A level 6 monk can quite literally change the world in that game, and the warrior monks coupled with increased trade income, numerous bloodthirsty enemies, and a very young daimyo make that faction very playable and enjoyable. I do need to give an honorable mention to the pious Uesegi, though.

By turn 67 I was in the deep South marching to the sea, all the No-dachi units completely upgraded.Īlthough cavalry and missile tactics are fun, nothing wins a man power like a good old fashioned mob of fanatical infantry, ad when it comes to pure shock value, no one compares to the No-Dachi. With the charge bonus they start out with couple with additional charge bonuses from buildings, the arts, and banzai, my No-dachi armies could use their 48 charge bonus to cleave through solid samurai battlelines almost academically. At first, I was very skeptical of their abilities because I'm naturally a more skirmish/cavalry-oriented general, but after failing my first several Takeda campaign attempts, I decided to buy into the "bigger hammer" philosophy and see where it took me. I've played all of the "Great Clans," and I think that the Date stick out as the best. Update: Conquered Kyoto,Became Shogun, Captured the Black Ship, Most of Japan's Clans declare war on me, Happy Ending. NOTE: All my cities have been fully developed (the level Fortress was reached only in my capital and another province) Now I plan to take Kyoto with all the armies I've assembled.

If you take a defensive temperament at the start as Shimazu after you conquer the Ito,and take control of all trade posts,it will be highly profitable.

I had a Full Stack army comprising of highly trained Samurai,Four units of those combat ninjas,6 matchlock ashigaru and 3 european cannons with a 15 stack army nearby comprising of mainly Yari Ashigaru, Bow Ashigaru and maybe some samurai. Until finally I had 16000 Koku in my treasury with a 1900 Koku income per turn on Normal tax rate and 3300 Koku Income on V.High. I kept building up my economy and mastering The Way of Chi. After embracing Christianity,i took control over ALL trade posts in the Seas of Japan, and Instead of going on the offensive,I allied with the Shoni and the Sagara. You see, yesterday I started a new campaign as the Shimazu, and sent all of my starting forces to capture the 2 Ito provinces nearby.
